Poulton Library
The Poulton Library refurbishment project was commissioned to upgrade the existing library facilities, improving accessibility, energy efficiency, and functionality for the local community. The works were undertaken on behalf of a local authority client, aiming to modernise the space while preserving its vital role as a community learning and engagement hub.
Duration
The project was carried out over a 12 week period, with phased works carefully programmed to minimise disruption to library operations and surrounding public areas.
Key Improvements Included
- Full window replacement with high performance UPVC glazing to improve insulation and reduce energy consumption.
- Installation of new internal partition walls using the Truline System 3000 FD30, creating a new meeting room equipped with integrated blinds, fire rated glass, and power/data points.
- New fire door installation with FD30 fire resistance and full height vision panels for enhanced safety and visibility.
- Comprehensive cladding replacement, including removal of existing panels, installation of vapour and moisture barriers, rigid insulation, and vertical composite cladding boards for durability and weather resistance.
- Decorative finishes to internal walls and optional ceiling treatments, improving aesthetics and user experience.
- Installation of smoke alarms and system updates, aligned with current safety regulations.
- Final sparkle clean, ensuring the facility was handed over ready for immediate use.
Challenges
- Maintaining public safety and operational continuity within a live environment.
- Working within the confines of an existing structure, requiring bespoke adaptation of materials and alignment with existing architectural features.
- Coordinating electrical and plumbing amendments during the window replacement phase.
- Ensuring compliance with fire safety standards during installation of new partitions and door sets.
- Managing weather sensitive cladding works with minimal programme impact.
Solutions
- Implemented a phased work schedule to isolate working zones, allowing the library to remain accessible where possible.
- Engaged in proactive collaboration with the client’s facilities and compliance teams to coordinate safety inspections and approvals.
- Utilised prefabricated fire-rated systems and off-site material preparation to streamline installation and reduce disruption.
- Introduced rigorous quality assurance procedures to ensure fire integrity, glazing performance, and finishing standards were fully met.
- Adopted environmentally conscious methods, including improved insulation and energy efficient windows, reducing the building’s carbon footprint.
Value Added for the Community and Client
