Accessible Home Extension - Clayton-le-Woods

This project demonstrates how inclusive, well planned construction can transform a home into a fully accessible and functional living environment. Commissioned to improve daily living conditions for a vulnerable resident, the works included a single storey rear extension, internal remodelling, and external landscaping all designed to enhance independence and comfort.

This project reflects our continued commitment to accessible housing, community focused design, and collaborative delivery with local partners and housing providers.

Project Duration

The project was delivered over a structured 24 week programme, ensuring seamless coordination between site operations, design teams, and care providers. The key stages included

  • General & Preparatory Works. Site set up, welfare, and security provisions.
  • Demolition & Strip Out. Removal of existing ramp access and redundant fixtures.
  • Extension & Roof Construction. Foundation and piling works, masonry, roof structure, Bauder roofing system, underfloor heating, windows, doors, and roof lanterns.
  • Internal Remodelling & Joinery. Knock throughs to therapy and bedroom areas, structural steelwork, and installation of new double doors.
  • Internal Finishes & M&E Plastering. flooring, lighting, heating modifications, and full decoration.
  • External Works. Re levelling of access routes, new handrailed ramps, and accessible paving to create safe, inclusive circulation.
  • Commissioning & Handover Testing. certification, and preparation of comprehensive O&M documentation.

Key Improvements Delivered

  • Creation of a bright, open plan sunroom/lounge offering year round accessibility and comfort.
  • Installation of roof lanterns and underfloor heating for light and warmth.
  • Ramped access to landscaped gardens, improving mobility and independence.
  • Structural modifications to allow improved room connectivity.
  • Durable, anti slip flooring and finishes designed for safety and usability.

Challenges

  • Ongoing 24 hour care provision within the property required sensitive scheduling.
  • Building Control requirements introduced delays during glazing installation.
  • Limited rear access constrained plant and materials movement.
  • Design alterations to ramp gradient to meet updated regulatory standards.

  • Coordinated planning with care teams to maintain normal routines for the end user.
  • Collaboration with Building Control and designers to achieve glazing compliance without design compromise.
  • Temporary widening of side access to accommodate compact machinery.
  • Revised ramp design produced in collaboration with design consultants to ensure safety and compliance.
