- Start date: 16th September 2024
- Completion date: 1st October 2025
Introduction
Bambers Building Contractors were appointed by Lancashire County Council to deliver a specialist refurbishment project at Carr Head Primary School.
The works focused on replacing ageing curtain walling and external cladding, alongside improving accessibility to a key classroom area. Delivered within a live school environment, the project prioritised safety, safeguarding and minimal disruption.
From a community perspective, the scheme has created a safer, more inclusive and welcoming learning environment for pupils and staff, while improving the long term performance of the building.
Project Overview
Enhancing Safety, Accessibility and Building Performance in a Live Education Setting
This project involved the removal and replacement of existing curtain walling systems, installation of upgraded external cladding, and extension of an access ramp to improve inclusive access.
During the removal phase, severe deterioration was identified within timber framed windows and structural posts supporting the roof. Bambers undertook a redesign of the window systems and structural elements to maintain full structural integrity and compliance.
Key outcomes included improved thermal efficiency, enhanced accessibility, modernised aesthetics, and full compliance with building regulations, fire safety standards and safeguarding requirements.
The project was designed to modernise the building frontage while enhancing accessibility, safety and long term performance. Delivered within a constrained and busy high street setting, the works required careful planning, phased delivery and close stakeholder coordination to maintain safe public access and minimise disruption throughout the programme.
